Year groups and the 11+, explained
Does my child take the 11+ in Year 5 or Year 6?
In Year 6. The test is sat in September or October at the start of Year 6, and you register in the spring or summer of Year 5. A child starting Year 7 in September 2027 was in Year 5 in 2025-26 and sat the test in autumn 2026.
Which children take the 11+ for September 2027 entry?
Children born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016. Kent County Council gives this range for the Kent Test taken in 2026, and Kendrick School in Reading gives the same range for its own test.
When does 11+ registration open for September 2028 entry?
Most areas have not published it yet. On 26 September 2026 only Wirral (1 to 31 May 2027) and the Slough Consortium (May 2027, exact dates to come) had published dates for tests in autumn 2027. For September 2027 entry the windows ran from March (Bexley) to early September (Tiffin), so check each area from early spring.
What if my summer-born child is a year behind their age group?
The Department for Education says a child educated outside the normal age group needs a new request when moving to secondary school: you ask each school's admission authority alongside your application, and it decides. For the Kent Test, Kent County Council asks families of children outside the age range who expect to transfer that September to email its admissions team.
