Questions parents ask

Can a practice percentage be turned into an 11+ score?

No. Official 11+ scores are standardised: the marks are adjusted for each child's age in years and months and compared with the children who sat that year's test. A home paper has neither the age adjustment nor that group of children, so any conversion would be a guess.

My child got 80% on a mock. Will they pass?

A home mock cannot say. Each area and school sets its own rules, a qualifying score does not always mean a place, and publishers' papers differ in difficulty. What 80% can tell you is how this paper went under these conditions, and which marks to go back over.

Why does the checker ask whether the paper was timed?

The real test is timed. A score made without a clock can drop once time is short, so an untimed score should only be compared with other untimed scores.

How do I know if my child is really improving?

Compare only like with like: first attempts on the same kind of paper, timed the same way. On a short paper one question moves the percentage a lot, so the checker only calls a change a rise or a fall when it is bigger than chance usually explains.
