How many grammar schools are there in England?
163 state grammar schools, in 35 council areas. Kent has the most with 32, then Lincolnshire with 15 and Buckinghamshire with 13.
Can my child apply to a grammar school outside our council?
Yes. You can name any state school on your home council's application. Register for each school's test by its deadline, and check whether it gives priority by distance or catchment.
Are there grammar schools in every area?
No. Most areas of England have none. Grammar schools are clustered in places such as Kent, Buckinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Birmingham, Trafford and parts of London.
Do all grammar schools use the same 11+ test?
No. For the next tests, most use GL Assessment. Essex and Southend use CSSE; Bexley, Slough, Wirral and Plymouth use Quest; Trafford and Gloucestershire use FSCE; a few schools set their own.
