Questions people ask

Are there grammar schools in Sussex?

No. Sussex has no state grammar schools. The nearest to Brighton is The Skinners' School, 28 miles away; pick your own town on this page to see yours.

Which 11+ test do they use?

All 3 within 30 miles use GL Assessment.

Does living nearby get my child a place?

Not on its own. Your child must pass the school's 11+ test. Many schools then give places by distance or catchment area, and some take the highest scores wherever children live. Each school's page sets out its rules.

How we work this out

What it does

Sussex has no state grammar schools. Pick your town to see the nearest, with who they take and their 11+ test.

All 163 state grammar schools in England on the Department for Education's register, September 2026.

Method

  1. We start from the centre of the Sussex town you pick, on the Ordnance Survey's map of places.
  2. We measure a straight line from there to each school's registered location and list the schools inside your chosen distance, nearest first.
  3. Boys, girls or mixed, the test provider and the Year 7 places come from each school's own admission arrangements for September 2027.
  4. Schools named 'grammar' that are not state grammar schools come from the same DfE register: independent schools, and state schools it lists as non-selective.
