GL vs CEM 11+ style: which should you prepare for?
Choose resources from the school's current test guidance, not a GL-versus-CEM label alone. Buckinghamshire's current council guidance names GL Assessment; its schools consortium keeps historical CEM data. Bexley names Quest for the 2026 test and 2027 entry.

What does CEM mean, and where are the papers?

CEM stands for Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring. Cambridge now uses the name Cambridge Insight for its digital formative assessments. An old CEM-labelled practice book is not evidence that your chosen grammar school still uses that test. We do not host released CEM past papers here; use the current school’s official familiarisation links before choosing extra exercises.

Compare actual tasks, not stereotypes
We do not claim that every GL paper uses one style or that every old CEM resource has the same timings. Before using a resource, compare its instructions, answer format, subjects and section limits with the official material for your route.
- Suggested check: write the school and entry year on your resource list.
- Use older exercises for an identified skill, such as understanding a word in context.
- Do not reuse an old provider's score table for a different test.
- If the current provider is unclear, ask the school before buying route-specific practice.
A skill can transfer without a format claim
Worked example Vocabulary from context
Original teaching example. Despite the noisy room, Ivo remained composed and explained the plan clearly. Which word is closest to 'composed'? A musical, B calm, C confused, D silent, E hurried.
- The contrast with 'noisy' and the clear explanation point to control.
- Choose the meaning that fits the whole sentence.
Why this works: B, calm. Context decides which meaning fits.
Why the tempting route fails: A is connected with composing music, but that meaning does not fit here. This original vocabulary item is not presented as an official GL, CEM or Quest item.
