What it covers

The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test score (STTS), which is age-standardised and weighted 50% verbal, 25% maths and 25% non-verbal. We compare with every score in the birth-month files The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools published for 2023, 2024 and 2025 entry: 9,783, 9,685 and 7,737 children.

Method

  1. We count how many children in the chosen year's file scored lower than your score, and how many scored exactly the same.
  2. The share who scored lower is that count divided by all the children in the file. For 121 in the 2023-entry file: 6,190 of 9,783 scored lower (63.27%) and 171 scored exactly 121, so 121 was in the top 37%.
  3. Because many children share each score, the rank is a small range, from the share below to the share at or below. We lead with the share at or above, as 'the top N%'.
  4. 121 or more qualifies for every Bucks grammar school. That is a separate yes or no, not a ranking.

Uncertainty and limits

  • The files list every child who sat, so this is a count, not a sample estimate.
  • The 2023-entry file matches the official summary exactly (9,783 tested, 3,593 at 121 or more). The 2024 file has 9,685 rows against 9,683 in the summary, and the 2025 file 7,737 against 7,736, so those two years may include a revision or two.
  • The children who sit differ each year, including many from outside Buckinghamshire, so the same score can rank a little differently from year to year.

What the answer means

The answer says what share of the children who sat that year's test scored below your child's score. It cannot say which school will offer a place: in Bucks a score above 121 gives no extra priority, and places follow each school's own rules.

Questions people ask

What percentage of children pass the Bucks 11+?

For 2025 entry, 3,044 of the 7,736 children tested (39.3%) scored 121 or more, and 328 more qualified after a selection review. For 2023 entry it was 3,593 of 9,783 (36.7%).

What is the average Bucks 11+ score?

The middle child scored 114 for 2025 entry and 113 for 2023 entry. One child in ten scored 139 or more for 2025 entry.

Is a higher score than 121 better?

Not for places. Buckinghamshire's grammar schools do not rank qualified children by score, so 121 and 140 are treated the same. A higher score does rank higher among the children who sat, which is what this tool shows.

How is the Bucks score worked out?

The Secondary Transfer Test is age-standardised, then weighted 50% verbal skills, 25% maths and 25% non-verbal skills. We have found no official table that turns raw marks into Bucks scores, so this tool works from the score itself.
