What it covers

Your own prices for tuition, subscriptions, books, mock exams and travel. The three example plans are round illustrations we chose, not a survey of prices.

  1. Tuition is the hourly price × hours a week × weeks. £40 × 1 hour × 30 weeks is £1,200.
  2. A subscription is the monthly price × months, charged once a month and never again per week.
  3. Books and papers are a one-off amount; mocks are the number × the price each; travel is a weekly amount × tuition weeks.
  4. The total adds the five lines. The monthly figure spreads it over the longer of the tuition weeks and the subscription months.

Uncertainty and limits

  • Tutors differ on holiday weeks, cancellations and notice periods. An English school year has at least 190 school days, about 38 weeks, so more tuition weeks than that usually means paying through holidays.
  • We have no representative data on 11+ prices, so we show none. Use your real quotes.

The answer is what your plan costs in total, line by line, and roughly per month. It cannot say which option works best: spending more does not by itself lead to a better result.

How much does an 11+ tutor cost in total?

Multiply the hourly rate by hours a week and weeks. At £40 an hour, one hour a week for 30 weeks is £1,200 before books and mocks. We show no average price because no representative survey exists that we could check.

Do tutors charge in the school holidays?

Some do and some do not. An English school year has at least 190 school days, about 38 weeks, so ask whether a year's price includes holiday weeks.

Is 11+ preparation possible for free?

Yes. Most tests' publishers give free official familiarisation, CSSE publishes real past papers, and Buckinghamshire runs a free practice test for children it tests.
