Questions people ask

Do I have to live in the catchment to apply to a grammar school?

No. You can name any grammar school on your home council's application. A catchment or priority area only decides the order in which qualified children are offered places, and some schools, such as QE Boys and Wilson's, have no catchment at all.

How is the Henrietta Barnett three-mile priority measured?

HBS's 2027-28 policy gives priority to girls living within 3 miles of the school, measured in a straight line when you apply in October. This checker measures from your postcode's centre point, so it says 'too close to call' within half a kilometre of the limit.

Is Tiffin School's priority area a postcode list?

No. For 2027 entry Tiffin School's Priority Area is everyone living less than 10 km from the school, so it is a distance, not a list of postcodes. Tiffin Girls' Designated Area is a list of 44 postal districts.

How do I find my Buckinghamshire grammar school catchment?

Each Buckinghamshire grammar school sets its own catchment in its admissions policy. Buckinghamshire Council's school finder shows whether an address is in a school's catchment and its straight-line distance.

Method

  1. Your postcode is matched against each school's rule. A rule written as postcode districts or sectors, such as Sutton Grammar's SM1 to SM7, KT4, KT17, CR0 4 and CR4, is checked exactly.
  2. A rule written as a distance, such as Henrietta Barnett's 3 miles or Tiffin School's 10 km, is measured in a straight line from the centre of your postcode to the school's registered location.
  3. Where the measured distance is within 0.5 km of the limit, the answer says it is too close to call, because the school measures from your exact address and its own gate or door.
  4. Each school's test route and registration window come from the councils' and schools' published dates, worked out against today's date in the UK.

Uncertainty and limits

  • A postcode's centre point can be a few hundred metres from your front door, and further in rural areas.
  • Where we have not read a school's own priority area, most Kent and Buckinghamshire schools included, the answer sends you to the official finder or policy rather than guessing.

What the answer means

Inside means your postcode meets the school's published geographic priority rule. It only orders children who have qualified; it is not an offer. It cannot say whether your child will qualify or be offered a place, and it cannot replace the council's own measurement from your address.
