What your child sits

Three sessions. The first two are multiple choice and decide the result.

  • English and maths paper: 1 hour, with 5 minutes of practice and 25 minutes of assessed work for each subject.
  • Reasoning paper: about 1 hour including practice, covering verbal, non-verbal and spatial reasoning.
  • Writing task: 40 minutes including 10 minutes to plan. Not routinely marked, but it can be read by the headteacher panel.
  • Multiple choice, answered on a separate computer-marked answer sheet.

How it is scored

  • Three age-standardised scores: English, maths and reasoning. Each runs from 69 to 141.
  • For the 2025 test, a child needed a total of 332 or more with no score below 108.
  • The rule for the 2026 test is published in October 2026.
